We recently had an order for tailgate brake lights on a Toyota Hiace come through, and it turned into a good example of why we check every fitment before we ship. The customer's rego lookup confirmed the vehicle was a Hiace Commuter Bus — but it couldn't tell us which of two nearly identical tailgate light shapes their van actually had. We ended up asking them to measure the old part (was it roughly 2.5cm or 3cm across the mounting) before we'd send the replacement out.
That's not us being fussy. "Hiace" has been on Australian roads in one badge or another since 1989, across three completely different body generations, and Toyota kept small running changes going within each one. Here's how to actually tell which tail lights, headlights and corner lights your Hiace needs before you order.
Start with the generation, not just "Hiace"
There are three main Hiace body shapes still on the road in Australia, and they don't share parts:
- 100 Series (1989–2005) — the boxier, older-shape van, including the SBV/RCH/KZH variants sold in the mid-to-late '90s
- H200 (2005–2019) — the long-running "commuter bus" shape most tradies and operators know best, built for 14 years with several detail changes along the way
- H300 (2019–2024) — the current, more car-like front-drive generation
If you're not sure which one you've got, your compliance plate (near the driver's door hinge) has your actual build date — more reliable than "it's a 2006 model" from memory, especially near a generation changeover.
100 Series (1989–2005): two sub-variants, worth double-checking
The 100 Series itself had a mid-run variant split — the standard van and the SBV/RCH/KZH bodied versions from the mid-'90s — and the tail light shapes differ between them:
- Standard 100 Series (1989–2005): OEM-Style Tail Lights
- SBV / RCH / KZH (1995–2004): OEM-Style Tail Lights (SBV/RCH/KZH)
- Corner/indicator lights, standard van (RZH, 1989–2005): Indicator Lamp Corner Lights
- Corner/indicator lights, SBV (RCH, 1995–2003): Indicator Lamp Corner Lights (SBV)
If your van is from this era, the chassis code on your compliance plate (RZH, RCH, KZH etc.) is the fastest way to confirm which one you've got.
H200 (2005–2019): the one where measuring the old part actually matters
This is the generation our tailgate light order came from, and it's the one with the most variants still on the road — 14 years of production means plenty of detail changes, plus different rear configurations between van, Commuter Bus and cab-chassis builds. What we carry:
- General tail lights (2005–2019): Tail Lights, H200
- Sequential Smoked Tail Lights (2005–2018): Sequential Smoked Tail Lights for a styling upgrade over factory
- Tailgate Brake Lights (2005–2013): Tailgate Brake Lights — this is the part where a straight rego lookup genuinely can't tell us which shape your van has. If you're ordering this one, measure your existing light before you check out; it saves a round of back-and-forth on our end.
- Headlights, 2005–2010: OEM Style Headlights
- Headlights, 2010–2013: OEM Style Headlights
- Headlights, 2013–2019: OEM Style Headlights
Notice the headlights are split into three date ranges within the one H200 generation — another spot where "it's a 2011 Hiace" needs a firmer build date before we can confirm the right listing.
H300 (2019–2024): the current shape
If your Hiace is the newer, more car-like front end, you're after the OEM Style Tail Lights for H300. This generation is more consistent across its run so far, but always worth confirming your build date if you're right on the 2019 changeover.
Four things to check before you order
- Find your build date on the compliance plate — near the driver's door hinge — rather than going off purchase year or rego renewal.
- Note your body style — van, Commuter Bus or cab-chassis can affect rear light configuration within the same generation.
- If you're ordering a tailgate or brake light and you're not 100% sure, measure the existing part first. A rego search can confirm your Hiace is a Hiace — it can't always confirm which of two similar-looking tailgate lights you've actually got.
- Still unsure? Add it to your order notes. Every BLCKLINE order gets a fitment check before dispatch — that's the Fitment First™ Guarantee — but starting with your build date and a quick measurement means less back-and-forth and a faster dispatch.
We'd rather spend two minutes confirming the details up front than have a part going back and forth in the post. If you're ordering for a fleet or commercial Hiace and want to confirm several vehicles at once, get in touch before you order — we're happy to work through it with you.
